Every Steady Eddie arrives already knowing how to work. Some jobs want more than that: the operator the trade asks for by name, on your machine, for your pass. This is what that is, what it costs, and what it protects.
You do not have to hire anybody.
Name Hire is the third of three ways to work a unit, and most jobs never need it. Nothing below is a condition of buying, and nothing on your machine waits on it.
A unit ships knowing the basics of its machine family: how to sit, how to move, how to work to a mark, how to stop. You buy it, you fit it, you use it. Most owners stay here and it is a complete answer.
Your own operator teaches it on your own machine while STE Trainer watches. What comes out of that runs on your machines and nobody else's unless you say otherwise, and any licence over it is issued through Tacit Tessera, with a count of every hour it runs. It is taught on one machine of a family and serves that family. The operator who taught it keeps their way of working and is paid for every hour it runs, under their own agreement.
For the passes where the trade already knows who does not put machines in the water. You pick that operator before the pass, you pay for the hours it runs, and it stops when you choose something else.
These do not compete. An owner who never hires a name still gets a unit that works, and an owner who teaches their own operator still has what comes out of it held for them, on their own machines. Name Hire exists for the jobs where a specific pair of hands is the difference, and for nothing else.
A way of working, under a name, for the family of machine it was taught on.
How they read ground
Where they slow down, how they feel for a bottom they cannot see, how they load a platform that moves when they load it, and what they refuse to attempt.
In your own seat
On your machine, in the family it was taught on. Nothing is cut, nothing is tapped, no controller is flashed, and your machine's own safety systems stay in place and operating.
Never mixed
It is not blended with your own operator's way of working, and not with the basics the unit shipped with. One at a time, chosen before the pass.
Not a person for the day
They are not on your site. It cannot be passed to anyone else. It runs only while somebody on your crew says so.
One choice is the clearance and the bill.

The rate for a named way of working is set on the operator's own agreement, not here, and it is published where that agreement is, in words anybody can check. Nobody signs anything with us for it, and we quote no figure of our own.
The operator keeps their skill, and is paid every hour it works.
This part is not decoration. An operator who is treated well by the arrangement is an operator who stays in it, and a short list of hands worth hiring only exists while that stays true.
Nothing stops them working, teaching, taking on apprentices, or going elsewhere tomorrow. We never ask for that and we would not take it.
No lump sum and no handshake. A share of every hour their way of working is in a seat, because they kept the original.
If a machine is working their way, it says so. The name is the point of the arrangement and it stays attached to them.
They give notice, you are told the day it arrives, and no new job starts under it from then. The job you are running finishes, because stopping a machine mid-pass is its own hazard, and then it comes out of service. Your machine goes back to what you already had.
Steady Eddie and Strategic Agent require skill sets. Even Steven owns what is made of them. Tacit Tessera licenses them to OEMs and to AI.
An operator does not sell their skill. Their skill stays theirs. What is built from the recording is owned by Even Steven, held for that operator, and licensed through Tacit Tessera to whoever runs it, with the operator paid for every hour it is in a seat. The trade knows the shape from recorded music: the writer keeps the song, the house that holds the paper owns the recording, and the writer is paid every time it plays. A way of working proposes. It never authorizes.
- Loading a name changes no authority. Nothing moves because a way of working was loaded. A person on your crew starts the machine and clears it before Eddie engages a control.
- Hard safety limits outrank every person, and every person outranks the software. That order does not change for a hired name.
- The three ways to take control away by hand are unchanged. Red manual release on every actuator, human-only site mode, and the unit comes off.
Two screens, both behind a door.
Neither is public and neither is automatic. A person sets you up and a person answers your request.
Your own record.
What was recorded, what was built from it, the hours it worked and what you are owed. There is no password: you ask for a link and it is sent to your address, good once and good for fifteen minutes. Nobody at Steady Eddie can sign in as you.

The job-preparation software every Steady Eddie job runs through: what the machine is cleared to do today, who authorized it, and which way of working is in the seat. A work order records the name, so the hours you are billed for and the hours the operator is paid on come from one record.
Both screens are built. Our own crews and our own machines come first, and we would rather you read that here than find it out later.
