What we collect, and why.

What we collect

When you use the enquiry form we collect what you type into it: your name, your email address, your company or organization, a phone number if you give one, where you operate, and whatever you tell us about your fleet, including machine makes, models, how they are used and any notes you add.

The defence enquiry form asks for more, and it asks on purpose. As well as your name and contact details it asks for your role, your organization and what kind of organization it is, the country where the equipment would be used, whether your organization is in an alliance such as NATO, who would operate the equipment, what the work would be, and whether it would be transferred or re-exported. We ask because defence enquiries have to be screened before we can discuss anything, and because we may have to satisfy the Government of Canada that we know who we are dealing with. Answer only what you are able to; we treat what you write as your own statement, and we do not verify it before we reply.

Nothing else on this site asks you for personal information. We do not run advertising trackers, we do not sell data, and we do not build profiles on visitors. Our web host may keep ordinary server logs, such as an address, a timestamp and the page requested, for security and reliability.

Why we collect it

To answer your enquiry. We use what you send to work out which family your machine belongs to, to tell you where it stands, and to follow up with you.

For a defence enquiry there is a second reason, and it is a legal one: export control. Canadian law restricts what may be supplied, to whom and where, and requires an exporter to know the end user and the end use before supplying. The screening information you give us is used for that assessment, and for nothing else. It is not used for marketing, it is not passed to anyone for their own purposes, and giving it does not commit you to anything, or us to supplying you.

Who we share it with

Nobody. We do not sell, rent, trade or disclose your information to third parties for their own purposes. The only exceptions are the ordinary ones: the service providers who host this site and carry our email, who process it only on our instructions, and disclosure where the law requires it, such as a valid court order. If that ever changes, this notice changes first.

Defence enquiries carry one further exception, and you should know about it before you fill the form in: where an export permit, an advisory opinion or a determination is required, the screening information you give us may be provided to the Government of Canada, to Global Affairs Canada and the authorities that administer export controls, as part of that application. That is a legal requirement, not a choice we make.

How long we keep it

We keep enquiry records for as long as the enquiry is live, and for twenty-four months after our last contact with you, so we can pick a conversation up where it left off. After that we delete them. If you ask us to delete your information sooner, we will.

Screening records from the defence enquiry form are different: where an enquiry has been assessed for export control, we keep the screening record for as long as Canadian export-control record-keeping requires, which is longer than twenty-four months. We cannot delete a record we are required to hold, and we will tell you so, and why.

Where it is held

Steady Eddie is based in Western Canada. Your information may be stored or processed on servers operated by our hosting and email providers, which may be located outside Canada. Where that is the case, the information is subject to the laws of that country, including lawful access requests.

Your rights

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and under equivalent laws in other markets we deal with, you can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, give you a copy of it, correct anything that is wrong, delete it, or stop contacting you. Write to us and we will do it, normally within thirty days, at no charge. If you are not satisfied with how we handled your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Consent

Sending us an enquiry is your consent for us to use the information for the purpose above. You can withdraw that consent at any time by writing to us, and we will delete your record.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we handle personal information we will update this page and change the version and date at the top. This is version 2.4, dated 2026-09-06. It replaces version 2.3: a defence enquiry form was added to the site, so this notice now names three places where personal information is collected, and it says what that third form asks for, why export control is a second reason for collecting it, that screening information may be provided to the Government of Canada where a permit or determination requires it, and that screening records are kept for longer than ordinary enquiry records.
